Christmas Countdown 2015: Day 15

Let's face it, a large part of the joy of Christmas is about eating. This is the time of the year when most of us just don't feel as guilty about indulging in treats as during the rest of the year. And sometimes we just want that one special dish that makes the season all the more festive - just as Lorelai in these scenes from Gilmore Girls that we share with you for day 15 of our Christmas Countdown:

If you don't want to spoil that festive mood, just turn off the second video after 22 seconds ;)

Christmas Countdown 2015: Day 13

Remember Boston Legal, the TV show about a Boston law firm employing a bunch of neurotic, mostly bonkers, yet very charming attorneys? Well, it happens to be one of my favourite shows out there.

Since the guys from Crane Poole & Schmidt always knew how to throw a good party, I was pretty sure to find a few nice clips showing some crazy BL Christmas action to share with you. However, to my sheer astonishment, there's hardly anything online.

But don't fret, my dear BSPeeps, I took matters into my own hands. So, in order to celebrate this third Sunday of Advent properly, feast your eyes on a Boston Legal Christmas collage that's sure to drive the holiday spirit right into you. Happy Advent!

Christmas Countdown 2015: Day 11

On this Friday night and day 11 of our Christmas Countdown let's celebrate all winter holidays like there is no tomorrow! Of course you love your family, but sometimes they have passed or you just need to be with your special group of friends. Blood is thick but sometimes friendship is just as longlasting. So here's to friends! And here's to family! Heck, here's to both!

Have a great, wild Friday night just as these friends are having in this year's fun holiday event The Night Before:

Christmas Countdown 2015: Day 10

After yesterday's gloomy Krampus vibes, I'm more than ready to head back into a jolly, sugar-sweet Christmas mode. A quote quiz featuring a modern holiday classic should do the trick. Can you guess which movie the following quote is from and, above all, which word is missing?

"There was more than one ___________ present at the birth of Jesus?"

Find the solution here.

Film Review: Krampus (2015)

© Universal Pictures International | Source: IGN
USA; 98 min.; horror, comedy
Director: Michaël Dougherty
Writing: Todd Casey, Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields
Cinematography: Jules O'Loughlin
Cast: Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Emjay Anthony, Stefania LaVie Owen, Krista Stadler, Maverick Flack, Lolo Owen, Queenie Samuel

“It's Christmas. Nothing bad is going to happen on Christmas.”  -- Linda
The fun and joy of St Nick's Day lies well behind us. This gives us time to dive deeper into a more sinister aspect of the Advent season. An old European myth tells of a hideous creature named Krampus, a demonic anti-Santa - half man, half goat -, who likes to punish those children who behaved badly throughout the year and are thus unworthy of Santa's gifts.

In his new film, director Michael Dougherty takes the Krampus lore and turns it into an entertaining old-school horror experience. And while it is fun to watch Krampus and his evil little helpers wreak some havoc amongst a festive family gathering, the movie's underlying message to embrace the Christmas spirit and be thankful for what one has feels slightly force-fed. In the end, it's the overly serious tone that thwarts the film's potential to become a stand-out holiday classic.

Dougherty's efforts to point out the corruption of Christmas work well in the very beginning, though. In a glorious slow motion opening montage, we see a bunch of people storm a store while "It's the most wonderful time of the year" is playing in the background. The people, however, fight for last-minute gifts, spend money sans end, shout at each other and wither away in holiday madness. Here, Christmas is a capitalist hell, and while the whole thing is hilarious to behold, it's also quite shocking in all its accuracy.

When, afterwards, the main protagonists are introduced, we know for sure that this Christmas will most likely be an exchange of menace and misgivings instead of joy and happiness. With liberals Tom (Adam Scott) and Sarah (Toni Collette) and their two children facing the arrival of their gun-crazy, army-loving relatives Howard (David Koechner) and Linda (Allison Tolman) and their offspring, trouble is basically ready to happen. Tom and Sarah's son Max (Emjay Anthony) soon is fed-up with his gruff relatives and wishes his whole family gone, unaware that his impulsive plea summons Krampus. And the holiday demon is more than ready to haunt the family and ban each and every member to the underworld.

What ensues is, on the one hand, a narrative in which the family finds itself up against mean-spirited gingerbread men, a ravenous Jack In The Box, a zombie teddy bear, a murderous puppet and a vicious toy robot. Those sequences are neither shocking nor particularly graphic, but rather deliciously silly and just fun to watch. Additionally, they bring out the strongest feature of the film: the engaging prop and costume design. All the deadly playthings are crafted with detail and care, the gingerbread men endowed with lovely animation and cute sound effects. The evil elves helping Krampus along the way wear beautifully creepy masks, and the demon himself is a towering, unpleasant presence.

On the other hand, there is the emotional development from a broken family to a harmonious entity. Since Krampus is a Christmas movie, after all, this turn of events is to be expected. However, the respective changes feel so unnatural, so forced that they inspire some heavy eye-rolling rather than a heartwarming sensation. And once the family members begin to grow closer and find appreciation for each other, the enjoyable silliness begins to vanish into the background and sentimentality takes over. I personally would have preferred to see the film make more comedic use of the cliché-infested set-up and extend the general absurdity of it all.

But don't get me wrong, Krampus certainly is a nice alternative to the usual lovey-dovey Christmas fare that enters cinemas every December. It's fun, nice to look at and creepy in a retro, Gremlins kind of way. Unfortunately, the film takes itself a tad too seriously and instead of going bonkers eventually goes back to lovey-dovey - not even the ambitious ending can change this impression. So, be careful, Mr. Dougherty, because, come next year, Krampus might want to punish you for telling his story in such a sentimental way...

Film Review: Santa Claus (1985)

© TriStar Pictures | Source: www.chud.com
UK, USA; 104-107 min; adventure, family, fantasy, holiday
Director: Jeannot Szwarc
Writing: David Newman, Leslie Newman
Cast: Dudley Moore, John Lithgow, David Huddleston, Judy Cornwell, Burgess Meredith

There have been many versions of where Santa Claus came from and almost as many find themselves on the big or small screen as a movie. Most are family comedies that run on the visually impressive and heartwarming, yet slightly silly side. The 1985 attempt Santa Claus: The Movie is a little bit more mellow and fairytale-like, which might stem from the fact that it was a British-American co-production. But let’s take a closer look:

Santa Claus tries to do a lot in its 104 minutes runtime: It goes all the way back to the origins of the man with the white beard and red hat. Sometime in the late middle ages a generous, yet poor, woodcutter and his wife are on their way back from delivering presents to children in the surrounding villages when they get caught in a blizzard. Facing almost certain death these two good and giving people are rescued by a community of elves, who take them in. From that moment onwards the woodcutter takes on the role of Santa Claus and rewards nice children with presents every Christmas Eve.

In a swirl of time, presents and journeys around the globe, that is meant to establish the mythological figure of Santa Claus, the movie takes us to the present day. Here we are suddenly caught in a mix of modern story and festive fairytale.  An ambitious elf is wooed by a money-mad entrepreneur to make toys for him and get worldwide credit for it, but has to leave behind his values along the way. At the same time we have a children’s Romeo and Juliet situation, when Cornelia, the daughter of the previously mentioned rich entrepreneur, takes a liking to orphaned, homeless boy Joe. By a lucky incident the two run into Santa and together they save Christmas and its values from the greedy modern society of adults. All’s well that ends well and in the end Joe is even adopted by Santa and his wife. Lovely.

Even if it’s slightly clichéd, you can’t really fault a holiday movie for its overwhelming cheer that it wants to spread. This movie especially does a nice job of drawing you into Santa’s cozy North Pole home and, even after years of watching, we are still filled with the same excitement upon entering the elves workshop that we felt the first time. And, come on, even if it is slightly tacky, we do want that all encompassing happy ending, where the poor boy is given a family, the elf gets a promotion, and evil is banned from earth (quite literally in this movie). Also, the classic feel of the movie might stem from its underlying criticism of progress for progress’s sake. We see this in the story and it just might have influenced the making of the movie, motivating the creators to omit any unnecessary, in your face special effects.

Like so many Christmas movies Santa Claus tries to remind us of what is truly important in life. And even now, 30 years later, the story seems pretty relevant to our own reality. The only slight drawback is that the movie does not only want to tell a modern story, but wants to keep coming back to Santa’s origins as well. This is especially ambitious considering the slightly peculiar fun fact that there does not seem to be one official version of the movie. IMDB lists the runtime as 107 minutes, Wikipedia as 108 minutes, while my German DVD says the English original version is about 104 minutes long and the German version an even shorter 91 minutes… Imagine my wonder, when (after years of watching the German version) I got to experience some never before seen scenes, when I watched the English version for the first time! So who left what on the cutting room floor and what were we really meant to see?

While Santa Claus may be a bit too dense in storylines, it comes along with a fitting main cast that excels in its roles. David Huddleston makes for a superb Santa Claus that delivers kindness and fills the famous suit well. Dudley Moore plays experienced and eager, yet always cheerful elf Patch, who even in his ambition always remains slightly blue-eyed and nice. Finally, John Lithgow is perfect as B.Z., the greedy and ruthless toy magnate.

In my household, as in many others I am sure, Santa Claus is a Christmas classic and any verdict therefore must be slightly tainted with personal feelings of nostalgia. While the movie is not perfect and there are some scenes that I didn’t really need to see, it still is a holiday gem that forgoes any unnecessary special effects for the creation of an atmosphere of warmth and Christmas joy. Happy St. Nick’s Day, everyone!
