Manic Monday: Happy New Year 2016

Out with the old and in with the new... or so they say. A new year seemingly is the time for new beginnings, improvement and progress. Yet, like never before, there is a trend to dwell on the old and bring it back. Therefore we are starting our year with a Top 3 of renewals and remakes coming to us on the big and small screen in 2016:

TV:

3. Fuller House

The Tanners are back! On February 26 you no longer have to wonder 'whatever happened to predictability', since Netflix is releasing the next generation revival of 90's favorite Full House. This time it is centered on the widowed DJ (who apparently and thankfully did not marry Steve, so he is still alive - phew!), her two kids, sister, and best friend Kimmy Gibbler. But no worries, the rest of the family (sans Olsen twins) will be popping in regularly.

2. Gilmore Girls

As if we didn't love Netflix enough already, they are taking us back to Stars Hollow this year for four feature film-length episodes. Amy Sherman-Palladino is back in charge of writing and sets are already being built. Contract negotiations are still going on, but  most the major players seem excited to be involved. Melissa McCarthy, who played quirky chef Sookie St.James, remains a doubtfull retournee, as she is now a Hollywood A-lister and might be too busy. Only Ed Herrmann definitely can't be involved, since he sadly passed away since the show's finale in 2007.

1. X-Files
Starting January 24 the X-Files will be re-opened. In the form of a six-part event series Mulder and Scully will be dealing with the strange and alien again. But look out for some major changes in their personal lives.

Movies:

3. Ben Hur

The ancient epic is getting a new, sans gun-crazy Charlton Heston treatment. Already in post production, the movie is set to be released in March 2016. The cast includes Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell, Pedro Pascal, Morgan Freeman, and Nazanin Boniadi.

2. Jumanji

So far information is scarce, but a remake of the Robin Williams classic is definitely in the works with an end of 2016 release planned. Zack Helm wrote the script to the remake of the movie with one of the scariest drum uses ever.

1. Ghostbusters

'There's something strange in the neighborhood' again and this time there's an all-female group of Ghostbusters coming to the rescue. Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, and Leslie Jones will make up the fighting foursome and will be joined by new and old faces from the Ghostbusters world starting July 16.

There you have it: A whole lot of reasons to be nostalgic and happy about old stuff in the new year. And don't fear, this is just a selection of the remakes and reboots that'll make up 2016. At BSP we'll be continuing to dwell in the past for a few more days (to catch up on TV and movies and all that), too, and then we'll be back in full swing with new and original content next week.

But for now we wish you all a Happy New Year!
